We are asked about Green tea and weight loss nearly every day. This started back in 2001 when companies started pushing green tea as the latest way to lose weight. While we know Japanese green tea to be an extremely wonderful beverage, one that has been shown in numerous respected studies to be beneficial to one's health, is it good for weight loss in particular? Fueling this interest was an appearance on Oprah by Dr. Perricone where he claimed that a switch from coffee to green tea would help one lose weight.
Having personally watched the program on Oprah featuring Dr. Perricone as well as some of his infomercials, I have never actually heard him claim that green tea of itself would cause weight loss. Instead, he suggested that it was the switch away from coffee that seemed to help, and he naturally suggested green tea as a healthy alternative, which it is. Unfortunately, a multitude of companies took the opportunity to push their "green tea patches", extracts, and low grade green teas at the expense of people desparate to lose weight, a situation which continues to this day.
Until recently, I had seen little evidence that definitively showed drinking green tea would help a person lose weight. The few studies I have seen regarding this subject either did not show a clear cut benefit, or were from dubious sources. So I resisted promoting green tea for weight loss on this site for those reasons. Trust me when I say that not everyone was happy that I wouldn't tell them what they wanted to hear. Not long ago, however, I received an unsolicited email from one of our regular customers, one that forced me to re-examine the issue. When I read it, I was absolutely floored with our customers results. If this is a subject that interests you we recommend that you check out this green tea weight loss story. While our customer feels green tea played a major role in her weight loss, she had also combined it with an excercie and diet regime. I am sure it did play a part, but exactly how much remains unclear.
As you can imagine, as owner/operator/CEO of O-Cha.com, I have at all times at my disposal some of the best Japanese green teas that money can buy, of which I do drink several times a day. Weight loss or not, I love green tea and I am personally convinced it is one of the best things one can consume. The question that needs to be asked, however, is why was I still a bit overweight after drinking the best for many years if green tea by itself was supposed to melt away the pounds? Recent studies are starting to suggest that green tea will give a slight metabolic boost over and above what the caffeine in it already provides. One study I recently read suggests an additonal metabolism boost of about 79 calories per day. That being the case, over time if one were to change nothing about their diet or excercise regime, then most likely there would be some weight loss. However, 79 calories is not going to add up to very many pounds. For sure, it will be nothing like the "21.5 pounds in Only 3 weeks!" that some providers of Okinawan green tea claim. Even if true, that much weight loss in such a short of time would mean a lot of lean muscle loss - the worst thing a dieter could ever hope to lose!
If you are already on a diet an excercise regime, the little things can definitely add up. Those extra 79 calories could very well be the difference between a calorie defecit or surplus. However, if you are considering purchasing green tea specifically for weight loss and you change nothing else about either your diet or excercise regime and are expecting the pounds to melt off, your results will most likely be disappointing.
In all the years I have been selling green tea, I have never endorsed any other product on our website outside of our own - until now.
