Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asa-Giri"
Uji Gyokuro - Karigane

(5 reviews)

Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asa-Giri" -  From Uji, near Kyoto, is a high quality blend of first harvest gyokuro  leaf and gyokuro stems. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. The added stems add a tartness to this green tea and the combination of the two make this one very tasty Japanese green tea. It is prepared in exactly the same way as regular gyokuro, meaning more leaf at a lower temperature. Use 10 grams per 300ml or less of water. Be sure to pre-heat teapot and teacups and brew at 55-60C (131~140F) for 1.5~2 minutes.

Available in 100gm packages.

This karigane gyokuro is easy to brew and gives three good steeps.
It could be a nice alternative to gyokuro if you want to have gyokuro on a daily basis.

I love this gyokuro for it's different and exciting flavor. It's not as 'thick' on the palate as others because of the tartness from the stems. This gives it a complex and refreshing flavor and has become my favorite for taste and aroma.

This is the first good green tea I've ever had. It's very smooth and improves with successive brewings. I'm just ordered this for the 2nd time.

Only okay. Definitely finicky with brewing temperature and times, so play around with it. Generally somewhere in the 130-140 Fahrenheit range was best.

Advantages: Good intro gyokuro

Disadvantages: Not practical (most likely) for every day drinking, but not amazing enough for special occasions like the better gyokuros.

This is an easy gyokuro.

It has everything that Japanese shincha has to offer, sweetness, tartiness, and that rich umami flavor.

I say that this is an easy gyokuro, because it is neither of these things in excess. It is also very forgiving, and very easy to brew. I suggest using 1.0 grams/ounce, but it won't make much of a difference.

Yet, for these very reasons, I prefer other gyokuros to this one. It lacks the full, clean taste of the other teas on this site, and, to me, feels very unrewarding.

Advantages: Easy to brew.
Breadth of flavor.
A great starter gyokuro.

Disadvantages: No full taste.
