Consisting of 65-72 prongs, this whisk should not to be confused with imports from China. Made to produce a good head of froth on matcha, we picked this nice chasen for general purpose matcha drinking. This authentic hand-made tea whisk is made in Nara Prefecture. There are over 120 different types of Nara tea whisks, with the type of material, shape and number of splines varying according to the school of tea, and also on the kind of tea, whether it is weak or strong, to be served in very formal surroundings or at an open air tea ceremony, or if the whisk is for a travelling set.

About our bamboo tea whisk suppler (view detailed images) - Sabun Kubo Born 1940 and started making tea whisks in 1964. He is an artisan very keen on protecting traditional crafts.

Differences between Japanese and Chinese tea whisks... The vast majority of tea whisks seen on the market are made in China, not Japan. There is no market for whisks within China itself, nearly all are exported abroad and surprisingly, even to Japan. Japanese craftsmen start the whisk making process using a sharp knife to chip the end of the bamboo, giving it a clean sharp break, whereas in China it's tend to be done with a file. Because of this, the tip of the whisk prongs of Japanese whisks are known to last longer. The bamboo used in Japanese whisks is superior and is dried for well over a year before use.

Very Nice whisk and you can tell the quality right away if you have ever used the cheap Chinese mass produced ones. This whisk will last a very long time. Mixes thicker matcha very well, thinner matcha takes some effort however.

Advantages: Hand Crafted
Quality Product
Mixes thicker matcha perfectly

Disadvantages: Not so good for thinner matcha but still better then cheap knock off ones from certain tea places here in Ontario.

I owned both the Chinese matcha whisk ( bought from taobao ) and Japanese matcha whisk from O-Cha. Overall the Japanese one is much superior to the Chinese in several ways:

1) The Japanese tea whisk fit nicely on the Whisk stand, while the Chinese one does not fit ( the prongs do not lock well with the Whisk stand )

2) The Japanese one is much lighter. I could whisk the matcha easier.

3) The Japanese ones' prongs are also stronger than the Chinese ones'. You will know when you ground them against the bowl. Extra benefit when you are whisking the matcha vigorously

Advantages: Nice craftmanship/ strong prongs / light weight

Disadvantages: No

This is my first tea whisk ever and so far I am very satisfied, it is a high quality hand-made product. It comes with a sturdy plastic box which is ideal for transporting the tea whisk.

It is softer than China made. A handle is smaller than China so at first it is hard to control but afterward found that it takes less speed and time of making froth. I recommend this than China made.

Advantages: Use less speed and time to make froth than China made.

Disadvantages: Each brush gaps are not equal and so thickness ,too.
