While the majority of the Japanese green teas comes from Shizuoka Prefecture, Uji is in fact the oldest tea producing area in Japan, starting from around the 12th century. Because of it's reputation for high-class teas, it is important to note that some of the teas processed in Uji are not in fact grown in Uji, but are instead shipped in from other areas to aquire the "from Uji" label. While many of Japan's finest green teas originate in Uji, having a tea come from Uji itself will not guarantee that the tea is better than those from other areas. That being said, if your quest is for the finest green teas available, you will eventually be led to Uji tea.

Uji is located a short distance to the Southeast Kyoto. Positioned around the beautiful Uji river, it is graced with many beautiful, world class shrines and temples. Many of the chapters of The Tale of Genji, generally accepted as the world's oldest novel, are set in Uji.
We at O-Cha.com obtain our products by visiting the tea growning areas of Japan and sampling many teas. We obtain our products from a number of different vendors in both Uji and Shizuoka prefecture. We're sure you will enjoy what we have to offer.
