        Glazed Teapot for Green Tea

Introducing our exquisite handcrafted glazed teapot from Tokoname, Japan, renowned for its quality ceramic craftsmanship. This teapot is beautifully designed with a tall, slim profile, making it particularly well-suited for brewing deep-steamed (fukamushi) green tea, as its shape helps accommodate the finer tea particles typical of this style.

Featuring a finely meshed, removable stainless steel infuser basket, this teapot combines traditional aesthetics with modern convenience, facilitating easy cleaning and efficient tea steeping. While it is optimized for deep and medium-steamed green teas, this versatile teapot can also brew gyokuro or light-steamed green teas in a pinch. However, for those particular teas, which require ample room for leaf expansion, a different style of teapot might be preferable. For enthusiasts who primarily brew these types of teas, we recommend exploring our Asamushi, Gyokuro, and Light-Steamed Teapots category for more suitable options.

With a capacity of 370ml (12.5 oz), this teapot is perfect for serving several cups of your favorite green tea, making it both a practical and beautiful addition to your tea brewing collection.

                    Organic Kurasawa Sencha

Explore the robust qualities of Kagoshima Organic Sencha "Kurasawa", meticulously grown in the organic fields of Kirishima, Kagoshima. This light-steamed sencha boasts an intense green-yellow hue and a fresh, grassy aroma, making it a standout selection for green tea enthusiasts.

Distinctive in its composition, Kurasawa contains approximately 1.5 to 2 times the catechins found in regular sencha, offering a potent source of these beneficial antioxidants. This high catechin content adds a notably astringent quality to the tea, so it's recommended to brew it at lower temperatures to fully appreciate its depth without overwhelming bitterness.

Ideal for those seeking the health benefits of green tea, "Kurasawa" is not only healthful but also delicious when brewed correctly. We believe in the exceptional quality of this tea and are confident it will become a cherished part of your tea collection.

As with all our teas, it is packaged in nitrogen-flushed bags to ensure it reaches you with its freshness and flavor intact.

                            Shiboridashi Teapot for Green Tea

Experience the unparalleled quality of our handcrafted Shiboridashi teapot from Tokoname Prefecture, Japan. This exquisite teapot is increasingly rare and highly sought after by tea connoisseurs, especially those who appreciate the delicate nuances of brewing gyokuro, the most luxurious and costly type of loose-leaf green tea. Designed to brew at lower temperatures with a double amount of loose leaves, this teapot is perfect for extracting the subtle flavors and deep umami characteristic of gyokuro.

The Shiboridashi teapot's small size is purposefully designed to hold about 60ml (2 ounces) of water, making it ideal for preparing just one or two small cups at a time. This allows for multiple, concentrated infusions, each capturing the essence of the tea. The unique design features a thin gap between the inner body of the teapot and the lid, eliminating the need for a traditional filter basket and enhancing the infusion process for larger leaf teas like gyokuro and light-steamed asamushi sencha.

It’s important to note that due to its specific design, this teapot is best suited for larger leaf teas and not recommended for fine leaf particles like those found in deep-steamed green tea (fukamushi-cha).

Each Shiboridashi teapot is a testament to the artisan's skill, with attention to detail that might not be immediately apparent but significantly enhances both functionality and aesthetic appeal. Given the handcrafted nature of these teapots, slight variations from the images shown may occur, adding to the uniqueness of each piece.

For those deeply engaged in the art of tea, particularly gyokuro enthusiasts, our Shiboridashi and Houhin teapots offer an optimal brewing tool, combining traditional craftsmanship with effective modern design.

                                Tokoname Shiboridashi Teapot

Discover the artistry of our Shiboridashi teapot, meticulously handcrafted in Tokoname Prefecture, Japan. This teapot is exquisitely tailored for gyokuro enthusiasts, accommodating the specific brewing requirements of this luxurious loose-leaf green tea. Known for its need for lower temperatures and higher tea-to-water ratios, gyokuro finds a perfect match in this teapot's design, which ensures optimal flavor extraction and precise temperature control during multiple infusions.

The Shiboridashi teapot's compact size, measuring 10.5 cm wide by 5.3 cm tall and holding approximately 100ml (3.4 ounces), is ideally suited for preparing individual cups of tea. Its unique design foregoes a traditional filter basket, featuring instead a narrow gap between the teapot’s body and the lid, which aids in a smooth pour while effectively retaining larger tea leaves, such as those of gyokuro and light-steamed asamushi sencha. This thoughtful feature makes it especially suited for teas requiring room to expand without escaping into the brew.

Please note, due to its specific features, this teapot is recommended for larger leaf teas and may not be suitable for finer leaf varieties like fukamushi-cha, which could slip through the gap.

Crafted with an eye for both beauty and functionality, each Shiboridashi teapot is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of Tokoname artisans. Due to the handcrafted nature of these teapots, slight variations from the images shown are to be expected, each piece adding a unique character to your tea brewing rituals.

Ideal for those deeply invested in the nuances of green tea, particularly gyokuro, this Shiboridashi teapot promises a refined brewing experience, blending traditional techniques with modern aesthetic sensibilities.

Known for its shade-grown cultivation, gyokuro boasts a greener hue and a naturally sweeter taste compared to more commonly found green teas. This specific blend enriches the classic gyokuro with the addition of stems, introducing a delightful tartness that complements its sweetness.

Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asagiri" offers a perfect introduction to brewing gyokuro, especially for those new to this style, at an economical price. The brewing process mirrors that of traditional gyokuro: use more leaf, brew at lower temperatures, and allow a longer steeping time to fully develop its depth and character. We recommend using 10 grams of tea per 300ml or less of water, pre-heating your teapot and teacups, and brewing at 55-60°C (131-140°F) for 1.5 to 2 minutes.

Available in 100gm packages, Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asagiri" is an excellent choice for anyone eager to explore the refined taste of a premium Japanese green tea.

This limited-edition gyokuro is a testament to our commitment to providing only the finest teas. It is a rare opportunity for us to share such an exceptional product, sourced directly from the Tsuen family who have been serving quality teas by the Uji river since 1160.

Cultivated in the revered Shirakawa region, this gyokuro is a product of meticulous care and traditional methods. Shade-grown before harvesting, it boasts a richer green color and a sweeter flavor, distinct characteristics of top-tier gyokuro. This tea is especially rare, made entirely from hand-picked Gokou cultivar leaves and shaded using traditional straw and reed screens, rather than modern shade cloth.

This "old school" approach to tea cultivation not only enhances its quality but also its authenticity. Uji Shirakawa Gyokuro is not typically recommended for beginners due to its sophisticated brewing requirements. It's a connoisseur’s choice, perfect for those who have mastered the art of brewing gyokuro and appreciate its delicate nuances.

Available in 30-gram packages, this exquisite gyokuro is for those looking to indulge in one of the finest green teas Japan has to offer. Unlike the vast majority of green tea tea bags you run across, each of our Gyokuro Green Tea Bags consists of 5 grams of high quality gyokuro leaf (not tea dust).  There are a few gyokuro stems in this tea bag which give the tea a slight astringency but the main flavor is gyokuro all the way.

This tea bag comes in a triangular, biodegradable (not plastic or nylon) mesh infusion bag and will not affect the taste as traditional paper teabags are known to do. A wonderful grassy aroma awaits you when you open the re-sealable package.

As of November 2020, the tea bag material used for our Uji green tea bags is composed of a starch based biomass material derived from plants. In addition to the filter, the laminate on the tag and string of this product also incorporate the same environmentally-friendly material.

Instructions for Brewing Gyokuro Tea Bag

To achieve the best results when brewing gyokuro tea, it is crucial to manage the temperature carefully. Here is a recommended procedure using two cups:

                                                                                        1. Pour hot water (90°C / 194°F) into the first cup and allow it to sit for approximately one minute. This step will cause the temperature of the water to decrease (refer to detailed product images for guidance).

                                                                                        2. Transfer the water from the first cup to the second cup. This action will further reduce the water's temperature (detailed product images provide more information).

                                                                                        3. Place the tea bag into the now pre-warmed first cup and pour the water from the second cup back into the first cup, over the tea bag. The ideal brewing temperature is 55°C / 131°F. Allow the tea to brew for 2.5 to 3 minutes, which is longer than the typical brewing time for sencha tea. After brewing, move the used tea bag to the second cup for any additional infusions.

This new and rare variety of gyokuro green tea was registered only 8 years ago. Grown by a select few farms in Kyushu, our Haruto is cultivated in Shibushi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. This tea is harvested earlier in the season, making it susceptible to frost damage, which adds to its rarity and exceptional quality.

                                                                                            • Organic Excellence: Unlike many organic gyokuro green teas, Haruto stands out with its superb quality, making it a rare gem in the tea world. Due to the restrictions on growing organic green teas, it's extremely difficult to find an organic gyokuro that tastes as good as non-organic gyokuro, but Haruto is one of the rare exceptions.

                                                                                            A Worthwhile Investment

While Organic Gyokuro Haruto may be priced higher than regular sencha, its exceptional quality and rarity justify the cost. Less than 1% of all green tea is grown and harvested as gyokuro, and an organic variety of this caliber is even more uncommon.

A few years back, we stumbled upon a real treasure and immediately knew we had to have it—this incredibly delicious sencha green tea. It is crafted from the tender young buds that haven't quite reached full maturity, which gives it a unique gentle sweetness and a taste that lingers beautifully after each sip. This tea, our 100% Yabukita "Mio", comes from the first flush of spring leaves, right from the Sakabe District of the Makinohara Plateau—Japan's top spot for tea thanks to its superior soil and climate.

What sets Sencha "Mio" apart is its medium steaming process, which imparts a subtle sweetness that is distinctly pleasant. It's a flavor that stays with you, perfectly balancing sweetness with a light astringency that keeps it interesting cup after cup. This Yabukita variety captures the essence of those still-maturing young buds, known as miru-me, blending their charm with an exquisite softness that makes it one of the finest green teas you can find in Shizuoka.

Mio's sibling green tea, Haruna, also grown in the same district, is harvested just a day or two later. This slight delay allows the leaves to develop a bit more, deepening the flavor but reducing that characteristic softness just a tad.

Mio is wonderfully easy to brew, though we do recommend using a teapot designed for fukuamushi-cha to get the best results. Just remember not to use water that's too hot, or steep it too long, or use too much leaf.

Here's a little tip for brewing: cool your water to about 70 degrees Celsius (160 F) and watch carefully as the tea leaves unfurl to their full extent.
