                            • Persimmon - Green Tea Soap

We came across this rather unique Japanese health related product recently. Similarly Japanese made products offered to customers outside of Japan are usually priced at many times what we offer this fantastic product for. Made by an older, established company in Kumamoto prefecture Japan, this high quality persimmon soap produces a creamy lather and is blended with persimmon tannin, green tea extract, and red clay. It removes oxidized sebum, dirt. In Japan persimmon soap is often used as a solution to the dreaded old person smell (known in Japanese as kareishū 加齢臭) where it is of particular concern due to the high value placed on personal hygiene.

"Old-Person Smell" Really Exists, Scientists Say...

This soap contains high levels of persimmon tannin extracted from persimmon fruit. The tannin in persimmon fruit helps to abolish nonenal chemicals associated with old person smell and has a deodorant effect, acting to reduce body odor associated with seniors.

Persimmon leaf sushi has an antibacterial and deodorant effect. The persimmon tannin in it is believed to have a deodorant effect when it chemically reacts with body odor.

                              Added Green Tea Extract!

Unlike other expensive, competing products, green tea extract has been added to this soap. Green tea extract contains high levels of polyphenols (catechins), has an added astringency and deodorant effect, among other beneficial effects.

Having personally used this product ourselves, we can attest that it is a very pleasant general purpose soap in addition to it's other unique properties.

                                  Kawane Wa-Kōcha

Kawane Wa-Kōcha is Japanese Black Tea grown in Kawane town (川根町), located in the Haibara District of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. While this area is notable for its production of mainly green teas, it may be surprising to know there are numerous growers who specialize in producing black teas as well. This particular version is produced by a rather old and famous company founded in the 8th year of the Meiji period (ca 1875). The tea blender is a 73 year old tea master and uses high quality techniques in the orthodox manner similar to the way traditional Darjeeling is made, but with a Japanese touch. This tea has characteristics similar to both Darjeeling and Ceylon tea, has a strong aroma, a smooth flavor, and has hints of Japanese sweetness. Kawane Wa-Kōcha can be served straight or with milk and sugar (usually on the last infusion). The breed is a blend of Zairai and Benifuki clones. Unlike most Japanese produced black teas which usually come from the second harvest, due to the higher latitudes this tea is grown at, the producer blends this black tea with both first and second harvests, the ratio changing according to year and conditions. The resulting tea results in a more bold flavor than normally encountered with other Japanese black teas.

To brew this particular tea, unlike with traditional green tea, you can achieve best results by bringing fresh water to nearly the boiling point in a kettle (instead of an air pot or water heater), and brewing two teaspoons per 8 ounces of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

If you also enjoy black tea in addition to Japanese green tea, consider adding this rare item to your shopping cart today!

Package includes a full 100 grams of high quality Japanese black tea.

Karigane Gyokuro Asagiri - From Uji

From Uji, near Kyoto, Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asagiri" is a high quality blend of first harvest gyokuro leaf and gyokuro stems. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. While this is a very delicious green tea in it's own right, since brewing gyokuro takes practice to perfect we feel this green tea also makes a very good introduction to gyokuro brewing at an economical price point. The added stems add a tartness to this green tea and the combination of the two make this one very tasty Japanese green tea.

It is prepared in exactly the same way as regular gyokuro, meaning more leaf brewed at a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Use 10 grams per 300ml or less of water. Be sure to pre-heat teapot and teacups and brew at 55-60C (131~140F) for 1.5~2 minutes: How to Brew Gyokuro - Step-by-Step Instructions!

This first-harvest sencha comes straight from the southern tip of Japan and is a gem that's not to be missed.

We at O-Cha.com pride ourselves on being pioneers, as we were probably the first online shops to ever bring the delightful Sae Midori to tea enthusiasts all over the globe. And guess what? It's been a hit ever since!

Brewing this tea is a breeze! Sae Midori is a unique blend of Yabukita and Asa-Tsuyu tea plants, first registered in 1990. Thriving in the frost-free climes of Southern Kagoshima, this tea boasts a vibrant color and a tempting, sweet aroma that's reminiscent of fresh grass. Just opening the package sends out a wave of scent that's absolutely heavenly. It’s truly a spectacle in green, offering one of the richest emerald hues you'll ever see in a tea.

Here's a little tip: Sae Midori is a deep-steamed green tea with very fine leaves, almost like dust. While you can brew it in various teapots, it shines brightest when made in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha. Trust us, it makes a difference!

Like Manten, we realize Uji Matcha Taiko-San is an expensive matcha and we make no bones about it - this is about as an exclusive matcha as you will ever find. If you are in search of the absolute best matcha available anywhere, however, then your search is over! Until O-Cha.com obtained this gem from Japan's oldest teashop, this matcha had never been sold outside of Japan.

A few words about this item...

The farm where Taiko-San is grown is known as "Taikou-tsutsumi" and is located not too far from our supplier Tsuen tea's shop in Uji Japan. The area is both a tea farm as well as an archaeological site. The matcha is produced in this small field by the river beside an ancient levee, which is being studied for its construction methods. The grower, Mr. Fukui, farms several strains of tea in this plot and he adjusts the blend every year according to the plants condition to create the specific flavor. As with Manten, the plot is small and the yield is limited.

This handpicked tea has an abundance of umami, which has been described by Tsuen as sweet with a hint of bitter and having a fresh green smell. The color is a rich and dark, very intense green froth. Compared with Manten, this matcha has a more masculine taste. Again, the grower has an extremely small production, and is currently supplying only the local market with this grade so the supply is extremely limited. O-Cha.com will have this item in stock as supplies are available, which may be very hit and miss. Because of limited space and the age of the tea plants used for this item the grower will never be able to increase his production. There is no competition for this grade - this is a connoisseur's class matcha. As with matcha Manten, O-Cha.com is the first to carry this matcha outside of Japan. Koicha (matcha which can be made thick) is sweeter, milder tasting than usucha (the normal matcha which is made in a thinner consistency). Because twice the amount of tea powder is used to make a thicker tea, a milder, less bitter product is required. While you can brew a thick matcha in the normal "thin" manner, the opposite is not true and there are really very few matcha green teas which one can make a true thick style matcha. Taiko-san, along with Manten, however, is one of those.

If you wish to brew this in a thick manner, you may want to consider obtaining a tea whisk made especially for koicha
