    Starting in 2016, we began to offer an especially select Kyoto sencha from the Tsuen teahouse in Uji, Kyoto Japan. They call this lineup "Chadōraku" and each year it is different. Tsuen teashop owner Yusuke Tsuen is an expert tea taster and has won many awards in tea tasting competitions so you can be sure that what he selects will be outstanding.

    For 2018 it's our pleasure to be able to offer an especially outstanding, Limited Edition light steamed green tea ("asamushi-cha") from Minamiyamashiro village (お茶の京都みなみやましろ村) near Uji. We exclusively obtain this from Japan's oldest teashop, Tsuen Tea. This item is 100% Sakimidori leaves from the first harvest. Seldom do we come across a light steamed green tea with needles of this quality and appearance. When brewed, it yields a very nice pronounced Kyoto umami flavor. The astringency is a bit strong and it's got somewhat of a tart taste and for that reason, we consider this to be somewhat of an advanced brewer's green tea. If brewed properly under capable hands, however, it will result in a very nice infusion with strong umami aftertaste. Although you could brew this in any type of Japanese teapot, you will get the best out of it by brewing in either a hōhin or shiboridashi teapot.

    Yes, we realize it is rather expensive - obviously a lot of hard work went into producing this gem of a green tea. However, our job has always been to first and foremost obtain the best green teas possible for our customers with pricing being a secondary (but still important) consideration. For that reason, we offer this in 30 gram packaging. To keep costs down, this is one of the few green teas we carry in which we will not be able to offer bonus points. Here is your chance to try some of the best of what Japan has to offer in Japanese green tea.

    This green tea comes from Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves.  When we offered this for the first time in 2017, we knew we would buy this one as soon as we tried it and sure enough it had sold out by December. Organic Sae Midori asamushi is a light steamed green tea of the Sae Midori clone and is somewhat rare to be processed in the light steamed form. This product is both flavorful and aromatic, much more so than the typical deep steamed Sae Midori. If you are a light-steamed green tea fan, you should really enjoy this one.  As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

  • Kabusecha - Organic

    This organic kabusecha green tea comes from Kirishima City, Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves. Organic Kabusecha is grown for 14 to 20 days under 45% shade before harvest giving it taste characteristics of both sencha and gyokuro. This 2016 version comes from the Yabukita clone and is medium steamed.  We consider this gem to be one of our best aquisitions of 2017, the aroma is unusually strong, it has a lovely green color and is quite flavorful.  Brew as you would for sencha. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

  • Zairai Organic Kirishima Sencha

    Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

    Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

  • Sōfū Sencha

    Sōfū sencha is an unusual variety of green tea, a cross between Yabukita and another cultivar known as "Inzatsu" 131.  Our version is grown in Tokunoshima, a small island located between Kagoshima and Okinawa.  Lightly steamed and a somewhat golden yellow color, it interstingly has a mixed green tea and floral, jasmine like taste and aroma.

    Sofu has become popular in recent years due to the purported wide range of potential health benefits. Research has shown that this is due to its anthranilic acid content, which is also found as an aroma component in jasmine tea. It is also being looking at as possibly being beneficial for dementia and Alzheimer's diseases. Sofu also contains a high amount of the component  quercetin (high in many fruits and vegetables such as onions), which is thought to improve brain of cognitive function. 

    We have a limited amount of this item. If you are a green tea fan who also enjoys oolong or jasmine tea, we think you'll really appreciate this tasty green tea.     Kanayamidori Sencha - From Kirishima, Kagoshima prefecure in Southern Japan. Don't let the low price fool you - this is one very delicious green tea! A first rate, first harvest, light steamed green tea (asamushi) of very high quality. This green tea has a particularly nice velvety, thick mouth-feel and produces multiple flavorful infusions. Well balanced with just the right amount of astringency and very aromatic. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged.

Loose leaf asamushi sencha will usually have large leaf particles and are suitable to be brewed in all types of Japanese green teapots, including those with ceramic "sesame" filters. When brewed, light steamed green tea tends to have a clear, light appearance, usually a bit on the yellowish side, subtle flavors, but it is often quite aromatic.  Asamushi can also be somewhat astringent depending on the individual tea.
