  • Shirakawa Gyokuro

    • A Tsuen Tea!
    • Rare!

The highest grade of gyokuro we sell from Japan's oldest continuously operating tea shop, Tsuen in Uji near Kyoto. Note that Uji Shirakawa Gyokuro is a very limited edition item, we are supplying it because the opportunity to offer it presented itself to us and we strive to supply the best of the best. We do not recommend that you purchase this rare item unless you have previously practiced brewing gyokuro. O-Cha.com is honored to offer this superb green tea supplied to us from the Tsuen family who have operated their teashop from same location on the banks of the Uji river since 1160.

Grown in nearby Shirakawa, this is an extremely high quality gyokuro. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. Less that 0.5 % of all green tea harvested in Japan ends up as gyokuro, and among those, this gem is near the top. This green tea is hand-picked (rare - see video tab) and is pure "Gokou" cultivar. Another unique aspect is that unlike the majority of gyokuro grown today, the shading is not done with modern shade cloth but instead using traditional straw and reed screening. The combination of hand-picking and traditional shading methods make this a very "old school" gyokuro.

Once you learn to make it properly, you wil be hooked for life! Since this is a connoisseur grade of gyokuro and is not considered a beginner's green tea, make sure to read our how to brew gyokuro page as it is brewed differently than sencha.

  • Organic Gyokuro from Shizuoka

    • Rare!
    • High Theanine!

A very high quality organic gyokuro grown by a farmer in Shizuoka who is dedicated to growing one tea only - organic gyokuro. Until now we have never been impressed with the myriad of samples of organic gyokuro we have been offered over the years, we refused to purchase these teas in the past simply to fill the "organic" niche. Fortunately the day has arrived where we can finally offer this item.

Yes, the price is a bit more expensive than your regular sencha green tea, but considering that less than 1% of all green tea is grown and harvested as gyokuro, and even more rare an organic one that's this superb, that's just how it rolls with a tea of this caliber. To give more customers the opportunity to try this tea, we have decided to package it in 50 gram packages.

From the Sae Midori clone, we find this tea to be very delightful with complex umami notes and after taste.  Actually, complex may not be the right word - this green tea's umami is outright intense! Thoroughly delicious when brewed correctly, probably best made in a shiboridashi teapot with care. As with all gyokuro, it is shade grown for about three weeks before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste.  Once you learn to make it properly, you wil be hooked for life!

This is not really a beginner green tea, care must be taken when brewing. Be sure to read our brewing instructions as it is brewed differently than sencha: How to Brew Gyokuro - Step-by-Step Instructions!

  • Deep Steamed Oku Midori Sencha

    • New & Improved!

Deep Steamed Oku Midori.  Due to the very early harvest that occurred in Japan, there's been quite a variance from the norm this year.  It's been a few years since we had a really great Oku Midori and thus we have put off buying it but this year it finally happened and this is definitely one of the gems of 2021.

From Kagoshima, an extremely flavorful, full of umami,  deep steamed green tea.  The high quality of this Oku Midori fukamushi green tea is obvious from the first sip. It has a very beautiful emerald green color to it and strong aroma. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves. Our personal opinion - This is probably one of the all around best green teas you will ever drink. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged, as fresh of a green tea as you can get.

  • Yutaka Midori Sencha

From the first harvest, a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori - Undoubtedly one of our most most popular green teas, this item is definitely a favorite with green tea connoisseurs. This year's version hails from Ei Town. Yutaka Midori is an exceptionally "green" green tea. We urge you to compare this sencha against any of the others available on the internet for it's nice emerald green color, wonderful aroma, and excellent taste. The reviews speak for themselves!

Brewing Notes:  We have recently brought the recommended brew time down to 30 seconds, this tea can be quite bold!

  • Sae Midori Sencha

    • Popular!

From the first harvest, this is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Sae Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction.

A very easy to brew green tea! The "Sae Midori" clone of green tea plant is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu varieties and was only just registered in 1990. Since it does not tolerate frost, it is mostly grown in Southern Kagoshima. Strong in color and aroma, but a bit on the sweet side, you will be greeted with a very wonderful, grassy aroma upon opening of the package. Without a doubt, this item offers one of the most intense, emerald green color you will likely ever come across in any green tea. We are sure you will be pleased!

Note that this is a deep steamed green tea with very fine, almost dust-like leaf particles. While you can brew it in a variety of teapots, it is best prepared in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha (deep steamed green tea)

  • Shizuoka Sencha Mio

Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, this 100% Yabukita green tea comes from the Makinohara tea growing district in Shizuoka Prefecture. We recently came across this gem and snapped it up on the spot - this is one very delicous sencha green tea! Sencha "Mio" is medium-steamed has a somewhat more pronounced grassy aroma and taste compared with the average deep steamed green tea and the taste remains on the palate for an extended time.

An overall easy brewer (a teapot for fukuamushi-cha is recommended, however). Be sure to not brew too hot, for too long, or with too much leaf. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, freshly packaged in nitrogen filled bags.

From the first harvest, Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori "Madoka" is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Madoka is quite similar to our original Yutaka Midori but is a bit less grassy, has a bit less steaming, and a bit more astringency, which means it probably also packs a bit more catechin punch. • Karigane Gyokuro Asagiri - From Uji

    • High Theanine!
    • Unique!

From Uji, near Kyoto, Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asagiri" is a high quality blend of first harvest gyokuro leaf and gyokuro stems. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. While this is a very delicious green tea in it's own right, since brewing gyokuro takes practice to perfect we feel this green tea also makes a very good introduction to gyokuro brewing at an economical price point. The added stems add a tartness to this green tea and the combination of the two make this one very tasty Japanese green tea.

It is prepared in exactly the same way as regular gyokuro, meaning more leaf brewed at a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Use 10 grams per 300ml or less of water. Fukamushi Sencha "Kaoru" has a somewhat more pronounced grassy aroma and taste compared with the average deep steamed green tea and the taste remains on the palate for an extended time.

An overall easy brewer (a teapot for fukuamushi-cha is recommended, however). Be sure to not brew too hot, for too long, or with too much leaf. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, freshly packaged in nitrogen filled bags.

  • Organic Gaba Tea

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

We are pleased to announce the introduction of a rather unique variety of green tea -  ORGANIC GABA tea (known as ギャバロン茶 in Japanese) or Gabaron Tea. As we are aware that many of our customer's main motivation for drinking green tea is for it's many purported health benefits, when we come across something unique and special health-wise, even though it may not be a traditional green tea we will always take a second look at it. The purported health benefits of this tea were too much to pass up.

GABA is tea that was developed in Japan for it’s special purported heath benefits using a unique fermentation process which produces high levels of GABA  (gamma-Aminobutyric acid) in tea leaves. Through experimentation, Japanese scientists found that fermenting green tea in an oxygen-free, nitrogen-rich environment for six to ten hours produced a green tea with very large amounts of GABA.

While green tea is (especially gyokuro and matcha) is known for it’s high levels of L-theanine, it also has other amino acids one of which being GABA.  Typically green tea has about 400mg/100g of GABA.  However, due to the unique fermentation process this special GABA tea has almost 50 times that amount!

Before you decide to purchase this tea, understand that the one drawback to the high levels of GABA amino acid was it produced a rather unusual taste that is not typical of sencha you may be used to. It seems the process that produces high amounts of GABA affect the taste greatly and it’s not easy to produce a GABA tea that also tastes great. Fortunately our producer not only manages to do that, but also is able to produce a total organic product at the same time. But know up front that it doesn't taste like regular sencha.

So what can you expect this tea to taste like?  If you are a regular green tea drinker, understand that your first encounter with GABA tea is going to be “different".  It has a rather unusual aroma. You may be hesitant to try it and your first smell of this tea will probably  give you a bit of a pause.  So with the understanding that although it may look like most sencha but that it's actually a different tea altogether, once brewed you will be pleasantly surprised upon drinking it.  It has a very nice nutty, buttery taste and is quite delicious. Our experience was that we were initially resistant to it based on the initial aroma, upon drinking it is quite  pleasing.

Since we here at O-Cha.com are not research scientists and cannot make claims of the health benefits of this tea, we provide it for you to try and enjoy and we will let you do your own research on the matter. We can say that if you are seeking more GABA in your diet, it would be hard to beat this natural product! With a bit of online research you will most likely easily find quite a few scientific studies of the purported health benefits of GABA-cha, a few of which are said to include:

    • Reduction of blood pressure in experimental animals and humans.
    • Reduction of insomnia and stress.
    • Improved concentration
    • Fatigue relief
    • Muscle growth
    • Fat loss
    • Lower sensitivity to pain

We look forward to hearing your reactions and experiences with this new and unique product, won't you try some today?

  • Organic Zairai Sencha - From Kirishima

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

We almost didn't carry Zairai sencha green tea in 2021 as our usual supplier suffered frost damage but we found another grower who also offered an excellent product so here it is.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

  • Kawane Wa-Kōcha

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

Kawane Wa-Kōcha is Japanese Black Tea grown in Kawane town (川根町), located in the Haibara District of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. While this area is notable for its production of mainly green teas, it may be surprising to know there are numerous growers who specialize in producing black teas as well. This particular version is produced by a rather old and famous company founded in the 8th year of the Meiji period (ca 1875). The tea blender is a 73 year old tea master and uses high quality techniques in the orthodox manner similar to the way traditional Darjeeling is made, but with a Japanese touch. This tea has characteristics similar to both Darjeeling and Ceylon tea, has a strong aroma, a smooth flavor, and has hints of Japanese sweetness. Kawane Wa-Kōcha can be served straight or with milk and sugar (usually on the last infusion). The breed is a blend of Zairai and Benifuki clones. Unlike most Japanese produced black teas which usually come from the second harvest, due to the higher latitudes this tea is grown at, the producer blends this black tea with both first and second harvests, the ratio changing according to year and conditions. The resulting tea results in a more bold flavor than normally encountered with other Japanese black teas.

To brew this particular tea, unlike with traditional green tea, you can achieve best results by bringing fresh water to nearly the boiling point in a kettle (instead of an air pot or water heater), and brewing two teaspoons per 8 ounces of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

If you also enjoy black tea in addition to Japanese green tea, consider adding this rare item to your shopping cart today!
