Sencha

Green tea in its most common form, sencha is grown under full sun until harvest. While there are many grades of sencha green tea available to the consumer, first harvest green tea is considered to be the best.

Important to note is that high quality first harvest green tea (harvested in late April to early May) can be purchased throughout the year - provided that it is properly stored under deep refrigerated conditions and then pulled and packaged shortly before purchase.

A special category of first harvest sencha, known as shincha ("new leaf"), is packaged and sold immediately without ever going into cold storage and is only available within a few months from harvest. Nearly all of our green teas come from the first harvest and should not be confused with lower grades of late harvest green teas such as bancha or kukicha that are often encountered. We do carry a few second harvest green teas which are still quite delicious, however.

All O-Cha.com sencha green tea is freshly packaged within a short time (one day to 2 weeks) from when you purchase them, important when purchasing any green tea.

From the first harvest, a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori - Undoubtedly one of our most most popular green teas, this item is definitely a favorite with green tea connoisseurs. This year's version hails from Ei Town. Yutaka Midori is an exceptionally "green" green tea. We urge you to compare this sencha against any of the others available on the internet for it's nice emerald green color, wonderful aroma, and excellent taste. The reviews speak for themselves!

    • A Tsuen Tea!
    • Rare!

It's our pleasure to be able to offer an especially outstanding, Limited Edition light steamed green tea  ("asamushi-cha") from the Watsuka growing region near Uji.  We exclusively obtain this from Japan's oldest teashop, Tsuen Tea. This item is 100% Yabukita leaves from the first harvest.  Seldom do we come across a light steamed green tea with needles of this quality and appearance. When brewed, it yields an intense flavor. Although you could brew this in any type of Japanese teapot, you will get get the best out of it by brewing in either a houhin or shiboridashi teapot.

Yes, we realize it is rather expensive - obviously a lot of hard work went into producing this gem of a green tea.  However, our job has always been to first and foremost obtain the best green teas possible for our customers with pricing being a secondary (but still important) consideration. For that reason, we offer this in 30 gram packaging.  To keep costs down, this is one of the few green teas we carry in which we will not be able to offer bonus points.  Here is your chance to try some of the best of what Japan has to offer in Japanese green tea.

Brewing notes: We have successfully brewed this at 1 gram & also at 1.2 grams per 1 oz (30 ml) of water at both lower and higher temperature ranges for 1.5 minutes and did not find it to be particularly fussy at either range of the spectrum.

From the first harvest, this is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Sae Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction.

A very easy to brew green tea! The "Sae Midori" clone of green tea plant is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu varieties and was only just registered in 1990. Since it does not tolerate frost, it is mostly grown in Southern Kagoshima. Strong in color and aroma, but a bit on the sweet side, you will be greeted with a very wonderful, grassy aroma upon opening of the package. Without a doubt, this item offers one of the most intense, emerald green color you will likely ever come across in any green tea. We are sure you will be pleased!

Note that this is a deep steamed green tea with very fine, almost dust-like leaf particles. While you can brew it in a variety of teapots, it is best prepared in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha (deep steamed green tea)

From the first harvest, Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori "Madoka" is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Madoka is quite similar to our original Yutaka Midori but is a bit less grassy, has a bit less steaming, and a bit more astringency, which means it probably also packs a bit more catechin punch. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, this 100% Yabukita green tea comes from the famous Makinohara tea growing district in Shizuoka Prefecture. Very green and very thick. Kawane Wa-Kōcha is Japanese Black Tea grown in Kawane town (川根町), located in the Haibara District of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. While this area is notable for its production of mainly green teas, it may be surprising to know there are numerous growers who specialize in producing black teas as well. This particular version is produced by a rather old and famous company founded in the 8th year of the Meiji period (ca 1875). The tea blender is a 73 year old tea master and uses high quality techniques in the orthodox manner similar to the way traditional Darjeeling is made, but with a Japanese touch. This tea has characteristics similar to both Darjeeling and Ceylon tea, has a strong aroma, a smooth flavor, and has hints of Japanese sweetness. Kawane Wa-Kōcha can be served straight or with milk and sugar (usually on the last infusion). The breed is a blend of Zairai and Benifuki clones. Unlike most Japanese produced black teas which usually come from the second harvest, due to the higher latitudes this tea is grown at, the producer blends this black tea with both first and second harvests, the ratio changing according to year and conditions. The resulting tea results in a more bold flavor than normally encountered with other Japanese black teas.

To brew this particular tea, unlike with traditional green tea, you can achieve best results by bringing fresh water to nearly the boiling point in a kettle (instead of an air pot or water heater), and brewing two teaspoons per 8 ounces of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

If you also enjoy black tea in addition to Japanese green tea, consider adding this rare item to your shopping cart today!

Package includes a full 100 grams of high quality Japanese black tea.

    • A Tsuen Tea!

Uji Sencha Green Tea Bags "Musashi" - For a quick, convenient, yet stellar cup of Japanese green tea, it will be hard to beat "Musashi" tea bags, by Tsuen tea - Japan's oldest tea shop. From Uji, this is a Tsuen proprietary blend of Yabukita breed karigane sencha along with stems from gyokuro, giving this tea a rather strong astringency with somewhat of a "tart", sharp taste. Very similar to Tsuen's Otsuusan, Musashi is less sweet with a bit more astringency for those who like a stronger tasting green tea. Try it today!

Each pyramid shaped silk-like tea bag is sealed in it's own foil package ensuring freshness and will produce multiple infusions. Very green, very delicious. (20) 2 gram sachets per package.

This delightful green tea is grown organically in Shizuoka. Medium steamed, Organic Sayamakaori Sencha is rather bold in flavor and imparts a much stronger than average aroma. The leaf itself has not been particularly finely processed, however once brewed it is very flavorful. Our particular Sayamakaori gives quite a few delicious multiple infusions, more than the average sencha we come across. Very delicious, we predict this will become a favorite with organic green tea enthusiasts. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

Price shown includes a full 100 grams of tea per package.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

While this green tea would be a very good tea for beginners, even seasoned green tea fans appreciate this sencha. One of the few second harvest green teas we sell, we carry Daily Sencha because it is an above average quality sencha and offers a very good quality-to-price ratio. This green tea is far and away better than what you will find at most grocery or health food stores and is freshly packaged in Japan within a very short time of when you purchase it. This item is a blend of green tea leaf from Japan's Southern Kyushu tea growing region. Be sure not to brew with too much heat or for too long or it can be overly bold.

Fresh from Japan, it comes in 100gm (3.52 oz) packaging.
