I used to buy Teapigs matcha in the UK. I found it quite pricey and never liked the taste so mixed it in food instead. When I saw all the amazing reviews at O-cha I must admit I was a tad sceptical but decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed about this matcha is the colour - it is a much darker and deeper green than what I have seen of other matchas I was buying in the UK. The second thing I noticed is how much I love the taste of this one. Will definitely be buying this again and trying other O-cha matchas.

Very energising yet calming, smooth, whisks well, not at all bitter. I've given four stars only because it hasn't quite got the natural milky sweetness (maybe I'm doing something wrong?) and it's also a little expensive. Still an overall good tea and will likely order again.

I am quite new to drinking matcha and started out by making powdered green tea as a latte with almond milk. Having noticed its energising qualities, I ventured to drink powdered green tea on its own and have learned to enjoy the taste. The fact that it gives me a lot of energy I wanted to see if genuine matcha differs from the powdered green tea I had tasted earlier so I decided to try this matcha as it was also organic. Today, I made my first matcha in the traditional way and indeed the difference was noticeable. This Kaoru matcha is indeed softer, smoother and somehow less bitter in taste, with a lovely foam formed on top when whisked. The only downside of this lovely organic matcha is that it is quite costly so I ended up paying customs duty on it as I only checked the helpful advice on the possible customs afterwards on the website. But it was well worth it and will probably order this matcha again.

when comes the 2017 matcha kaoru supreme?

I have still a can Match kaoru supreme with an expiring date sept. 2016?
How long can the expiry date be overdue if the can was not opened till now?

Even though we advise not to use after the expiration, if it was unopened and kept in the refrigerator this whole time, it's probably still good. They will stay good for quite a long time under refrigeration.

If it was not kept in the refrigerator, however, it's probably not good.

It's normal for properly made matcha to be released in the fall, not spring because it should be aged a bit. You sometimes see it in summer, but it's not at it's peak yet.

Good morning. I am interested in buying the Kaoru Supreme Organic Matcha. Can you please tell me if this matcha is tested to be radiation free? Also, is this ceremonial grade matcha? Thank you very much.

This originates in Kagoshima prefecture, there has never been a positive test result for radiation from there that we are aware of. Regardless, this matcha is tested by the grower yearly.

Yes, it's ceremonial grade, all of our matcha except for cooking matcha is ceremonial grade.

I recently found a can of this matcha powder I bought a few years ago. It has a lot no. 050613, expiration 5/31/14. I know it would be too stale to use as tea, but Is it still safe to use for smoothies and cooking?

The expirations we use are very conservative as we have fresh tea available to us at all times. So in reality expired products are usually good beyond the expiration date, but how far would depend on various factors: was ever opened, how it was stored (in the refrigerator?), etc. The date you mention is less than a year after expiration so it would just depend on how you stored it. My best guess is that you could still use it for smoothies and cooking without problem, but again, that depends on how it was stored and the condition of it - only you can make the final determination.

Hi, I recently received this matcha. Using a kitchen scale, about how many grams should I use for usucha? And is 70mL of water at 70°C enough?

    Kevin Moore

There is no hard fast rule, this takes some time and practice to perfect.  However, I just made a nice bowl of that using 2 scoops from a traditional Japanese bamboo teaspoon.  This came out to 2.5 grams. It took 55 mL of hot water to make it just right, so that would come out to 22 mL of hot water per gram of matcha.  That being the case, if you wish to use 70mL, you would use about 3 grams of matcha for that.

As  for the temperature, I think your temperature is a bit low.  I use 90℃ water to first heat my bowl, and also to pre-wet my whisk.  Then I dry off the bowl, add the matcha, then again I use 90℃  poured into a small teacup first to add to the matcha bowl. Of course the water cools down a bit from 90℃ as you transfer between vessels. Whisk vigorously, you should be able to obtain a nice green foam on top. If you don't, it probably means either you used too much water, you didn't pre-heat your bowl, or maybe both.  Practice makes perfect!
