Organic Kirishima Zairai Sencha

Score: 5.00. Votes: 8

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

This is probably the best tea I have tasted from this website. Brew at lowish temperatures 70 degrees. Has a unique taste different to other teas. Well recommended.

Very nice everyday tea. Complex flavors. A little sweet if brewed correctly. Try lower temps then suggested. You won't be disappointed.

Don't let the price fool you, this is actually a quality product. It is really light and fresh with beautiful green brew. There is complex green flavours like kale, grass and pistachio with a nicely smooth mouthfeel. Really good tea.

Sweet, grassy and refreshing, not to mention affordable, this is an ideal candidate for a daily sencha. Hopefully, o-cha keeps on carrying this gem.

My favorite sencha. Leaves are fragrant, aroma grassy with hint of berries or flowers or something. Flavor is fresh, deep and sweet.

Don't let the low price deter you. There is a lot going on in this tea. The leaves are highly fragrant, both dried and steeped. Flavors are uplifting, savory, sweet, deep, and complex, with notes of chestnut, pine, pistachio, and kale. It is reminiscent of upper-tier high mountain Chinese green teas.  Advantages: Very easy to brew and stands up to many steeps at varying temps.
