Shincha

Note: Every green tea located under this category is considered shincha at this time even if it doesn't specifically say the word shincha, or only has the word sencha in it's title.  This will remain the case until around the middle or end of June

2022 Shincha

You have good years, and you have not so good years. We're very happy to report that the 2022 green tea harvest was way better than last year's on just about every tea.  If you want to know which one is the best, that's hard to answer because you have a lot of choices in 2022.

Shincha FAQ's

What's The Difference Between Shincha And Sencha?

A lot of people have difficulty with this concept.  All shincha is sencha, not all sencha is shincha. So what is the difference?

Normally sencha green tea is harvested 3 or 4 times per year, the first harvest being the best. Out of that first harvest, the majority is put into cold storage where it can be pulled throughout the year as needed.  You can indeed have first harvest, fresh sencha throught the year provided it's pulled from refrigeration and has been recently packaged.

There's a portion of that first harvest which never goes into storage and which is put up for immediate sale - that's is known as shincha.

Is shincha better than first harvest sencha?

Not necessarily. It's true, there's not a fresher green tea than shincha.  The cold storage process does change the charachteristics of the tea somewhat.  In some cases for the better, in some cases not.   Shincha tends to be bolder tha regular first harvest sencha which mellows out a bit during the storage process. We can't say one is "better" than another. We can say that legions of customers want shincha as soon as it comes out to enjoy the freshest of the fresh sencha green tea.

When is Shincha available?

It's available from harvest in late April through usually June, as supplies permit. Quite often the tea we are selling in June is actually shincha though not labelled as such.

  • Yutaka Midori Sencha

     Improved for 2022!

O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Yutaka Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction. 2022 is turning out to be much better harvests of all teas in general over 2021 and this year we offer a particularly good green tea.

From the first harvest, a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori - Undoubtedly one of our most most popular green teas, this item is definitely a favorite with green tea connoisseurs. This year's version hails from Ei Town. Yutaka Midori is an exceptionally "green" green tea. We urge you to compare this sencha against any of the others available on the internet for it's nice emerald green color, wonderful aroma, and excellent taste. The reviews speak for themselves!

Brewing Notes:  We have recently brought the recommended brew time down to 30 seconds, this tea can be quite bold!

  • Sae Midori Sencha

    • Popular!

From the first harvest, this is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Sae Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction.

A very easy to brew green tea! The "Sae Midori" clone of green tea plant is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu varieties and was only just registered in 1990. Since it does not tolerate frost, it is mostly grown in Southern Kagoshima. Strong in color and aroma, but a bit on the sweet side, you will be greeted with a very wonderful, grassy aroma upon opening of the package. Without a doubt, this item offers one of the most intense, emerald green color you will likely ever come across in any green tea. We are sure you will be pleased!

Note that this is a deep steamed green tea with very fine, almost dust-like leaf particles. While you can brew it in a variety of teapots, it is best prepared in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha (deep steamed green tea)

Organic Sencha Tsuyu Hikari - Defininetly one of the better sencha green teas finds we have tried this year.  This light steamed sencha green tea is produced in Satsuma, Kagoshima Prefecture and of course is harvested from the first round of young leaves. This is a rather unusually delicious batch with beautiful green needles and great balance, it has a rich, silky mouthfeel.  As with most light steamed green teas, some of the taste is subtle but this one has a very nice, pronounced umami and lingering aftertaste.

From the first harvest, Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori "Madoka" is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. • Organic Zairai Sencha - From Kirishima

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

We almost didn't carry Zairai sencha green tea in 2021 as our usual supplier suffered frost damage but we found another grower who also offered an excellent product so here it is.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

What about "shincha" gyokuro and matcha?

Shade grown gyokuro and matcha leaf is usually harvested in May just like regular first harvest sencha. However, the normal procedure is to age the leaf of these products for a few months for optimum taste. This is why they are normally released of these teas occur in the fall and not spring. Although you can enjoy them earlier, until they are aged properly they will have a somewhat "green" taste to them. Further, during the summer the current year's gyokuro is often blended with the previous year's leaf when supplies or the previous year's tea are in low supply and won't last until fall.  There is nothing wrong with these teas, even though they are not at their peak quality.  However, they are not really "shincha".

It is the policy of O-Cha.com to not market "shincha matcha", "shincha gyokuro", or especially "shincha bancha" (a second or third harvest tea).
