    Shirakawa Uji Gyokuro

    • A Tsuen Tea!
    • Rare!
    • High Theanine!

The highest grade of gyokuro we sell from Japan's oldest continuously operating tea shop, Tsuen in Uji near Kyoto. Note that Uji Shirakawa Gyokuro is a very limited edition item, we are supplying it because the opportunity to offer it presented itself to us and we strive to supply the best of the best. We do not recommend that you purchase this rare item unless you have previously practiced brewing gyokuro. O-Cha.com is honored to offer this superb green tea supplied to us from the Tsuen family who have operated their teashop from same location on the banks of the Uji river since 1160.

Grown in nearby Shirakawa, this is an extremely high quality gyokuro. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. Less that 0.5 % of all green tea harvested in Japan ends up as gyokuro, and among those, this gem is near the top. This green tea is hand-picked (rare - see video tab) and is pure "Gokou" cultivar. Another unique aspect is that unlike the majority of gyokuro grown today, the shading is not done with modern shade cloth but instead using traditional straw and reed screening. The combination of hand-picking and traditional shading methods make this a very "old school" gyokuro.

Once you learn to make it properly, you wil be hooked for life! Since this is a connoisseur grade of gyokuro and is not considered a beginner's green tea, make sure to read our how to brew gyokuro page as it is brewed differently than sencha.

  • Kyoto Sencha - Chadōraku

    Kyoto Sencha - Chadōraku

    • A Tsuen Tea!
    • Rare!

Starting in 2016, we began to offer an especially select Kyoto sencha from the Tsuen teahouse in Uji, Kyoto Japan. They call this lineup "Chadōraku" and each year it is different. Tsuen teashop owner Yusuke Tsuen is an expert tea taster and has won many awards in tea tasting competitions so you can be sure that what he selects will be outstanding.

For 2017 it's our pleasure to be able to offer an especially outstanding, Limited Edition light steamed green tea ("asamushi-cha") from Minamiyamashiro village (お茶の京都みなみやましろ村) near Uji. We exclusively obtain this from Japan's oldest teashop, Tsuen Tea. This item is 100% Sakimidori leaves from the first harvest. Seldom do we come across a light steamed green tea with needles of this quality and appearance. When brewed, it yields a very nice pronounced Kyoto umami flavor. The astringency is a bit strong and it's got somewhat of a tart taste and for that reason, we consider this to be somewhat of an advanced brewer's green tea. If brewed properly under capable hands, however, it will result in a very nice infusion with strong umami aftertaste. Although you could brew this in any type of Japanese teapot, you will get the best out of it by brewing in either a hōhin or shiboridashi teapot.

Yes, we realize it is rather expensive - obviously a lot of hard work went into producing this gem of a green tea. However, our job has always been to first and foremost obtain the best green teas possible for our customers with pricing being a secondary (but still important) consideration. For that reason, we offer this in 30 gram packaging. To keep costs down, this is one of the few green teas we carry in which we will not be able to offer bonus points. Here is your chance to try some of the best of what Japan has to offer in Japanese green tea.

  • Hana no Kaori Uji Sencha

    Hana no Kaori Uji Sencha

    • A Tsuen Tea!
    • Rare!

"Hana no Kaori" translates as "Floral Aroma", which is what this sencha is all about. A rather unusual offering for you, Uji sencha "Hana no Kaori" was obtained through one of the growers of the Tsuen tea shop in Uji Japan. What's different about this tea? This unusual offering became "slightly" fermented. In the case of Chinese oolong tea, this of course is done on purpose. In the case of Japanese sencha, fermentation is normally something to be avoided as the tea will usually no longer be "green" anymore. In the case of "Hana no Kaori" this tea not only fermented slightly, but it also keeps it's very beautiful green color. The result was not only a beautiful green colored sencha, but one with a rather strong oolong-like floral notes and taste. All who have tried it have been impressed with the delicious taste of this sencha green tea - we could not pass it up!

We have a limited amount of this item. If you are a green tea fan who also enjoys oolong tea, we think you'll really appreciate this tasty green tea. Here is your chance to try a very high quality Japanese green tea with unique floral, oolong-like floral characteristics, shipped directly to you from Japan's oldest tea shop on the banks of the Uji river. • Sae Midori Sencha

    Sae Midori Sencha

    • Popular!

From the first harvest, this is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Sae Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction.

A very easy to brew green tea! The "Sae Midori" clone of green tea plant is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu varieties and was only just registered in 1990. Since it does not tolerate frost, it is mostly grown in Southern Kagoshima. Strong in color and aroma, but a bit on the sweet side, you will be greeted with a very wonderful, grassy aroma upon opening of the package. Without a doubt, this item offers one of the most intense, emerald green color you will likely ever come across in any green tea. We are sure you will be pleased!

Note that this is a deep steamed green tea with very fine, almost dust-like leaf particles. While you can brew it in a variety of teapots, it is best prepared in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha (deep steamed green tea)

From the first harvest, Kagoshima Sencha Yutaka Midori "Madoka" is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. Madoka is quite similar to our original Yutaka Midori but is a bit less grassy, has a bit less steaming, and a bit more astringency, which means it probably also packs a bit more catechin punch. From Uji, near Kyoto, Uji Karigane Gyokuro "Asagiri" is a high quality blend of first harvest gyokuro leaf and gyokuro stems. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. While this is a very delicious green tea in it's own right, since brewing gyokuro takes practice to perfect we feel this green tea also makes a very good introduction to gyokuro brewing at an economical price point. The added stems add a tartness to this green tea and the combination of the two make this one very tasty Japanese green tea.

It is prepared in exactly the same way as regular gyokuro, meaning more leaf brewed at a lower temperature for a longer period of time. Use 10 grams per 300ml or less of water. Kabusecha

From the first harvest in Uji. Kabusecha is grown in the shade for 14~20 days before harvest under 45% shade, giving it characteristics of both sencha and gyokuro. A sweeter, less grassy and more vegital, less astringent taste than regular sencha, you can definitely taste vegitive hint's of gyokuro.  It is easy to brew, not overly astringent, medium steamed, has a lovely green color, and is reasonably priced making it an all around versitle winner of a green tea. Although it has hints of gyokuro, be sure to brew it as you would for sencha, not gyokuro.

  • Kawane Wa-Kōcha

    Kawane Wa-Kōcha

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

Kawane Wa-Kōcha is Japanese Black Tea grown in Kawane town (川根町), located in the Haibara District of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. While this area is notable for its production of mainly green teas, it may be surprising to know there are numerous growers who specialize in producing black teas as well. This particular version is produced by a rather old and famous company founded in the 8th year of the Meiji period (ca 1875). The tea blender is a 73 year old tea master and uses high quality techniques in the orthodox manner similar to the way traditional Darjeeling is made, but with a Japanese touch. This tea has characteristics similar to both Darjeeling and Ceylon tea, has a strong aroma, a smooth flavor, and has hints of Japanese sweetness. Kawane Wa-Kōcha can be served straight or with milk and sugar (usually on the last infusion). The breed is a blend of Zairai and Benifuki clones. Unlike most Japanese produced black teas which usually come from the second harvest, due to the higher latitudes this tea is grown at, the producer blends this black tea with both first and second harvests, the ratio changing according to year and conditions. The resulting tea results in a more bold flavor than normally encountered with other Japanese black teas.

To brew this particular tea, unlike with traditional green tea, you can achieve best results by bringing fresh water to nearly the boiling point in a kettle (instead of an air pot or water heater), and brewing two teaspoons per 8 ounces of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

If you also enjoy black tea in addition to Japanese green tea, consider adding this rare item to your shopping cart today!

  • 7132 Organic Sencha

    7132 Organic Sencha

Organic Sencha "7132" - Grown organically in Shizuoka, this fukamushi (deep steamed) sencha has a dark green color and cloudy consistency - as deep steamed green tea should. "7132" refers to the particular clone of green tea plant this product is derived from and is usually steamed lightly making this is a rather seldom encountered green tea. Some stems were left in this product purposefully to make a more complex flavor profile. As typical with fukamushi green tea, many of the leaf particles are also very fine, almost dust-like, so a teapot with a very fine infuser screen would work best with this green tea (you may want to take a look at our teapots designed with fukamushi in mind).  This is a particularly delicious, easy to drink green tea which beginners and seasoned connoisseurs will surely enjoy!

  • Zairai Organic Kirishima Sencha

    Zairai Organic Kirishima Sencha

    • Rare!
    • Unique!

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to it's high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivitive of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and charactaristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to culitviate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones does not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Very delicious, here's your chance to experience a green tea with characteristics of the teas of old Japan. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.
