    Handcrafted in Tokoname, Aichi prefecture Japan, this Mogake style Hōhin teapot was made with gyokuro and light steamed asamushi sencha brewing in mind. The teapot was wrapped with seaweed, causing the salt from the seaweed to oxidize with the clay making a unique pattern on the teapot. Since gyokuro should be brewed at a lower temperature and with double the amount of loose leaf (usually the most expensive green teas available), the use of this special set is ideal for gyokuro enthusiasts, allowing multiple infusions from the same gyokuro leaf.

    This teapot matches perfectly with our mogake yuzamashi water cooler and mogake teacup.

    How to Brew Gyokuro - Step-by-Step Instructions!

    The teapot is intentionally made very small, holding just 135 ml of water. The lid fits the inside of the teapot wall perfectly. There is a very well made and thought out spout and the pour is smooth.  This teapot is suitable for any gyokuro or light steamed green tea.  You could probably use it with most medium-steamed green teas though you might get some clogging on the ceramic inner spout.  Not suitable for deep steamed green tea as the fine, dust-like leaf particles.

    The highest grade of gyokuro we sell from Japan's oldest continuously operating tea shop, Tsuen in Uji near Kyoto. Note that Uji Shirakawa Gyokuro is a very limited edition item, we are supplying it because the opportunity to offer it presented itself to us and we strive to supply the best of the best. We do not recommend that you purchase this rare item unless you have previously practiced brewing gyokuro. O-Cha.com is honored to offer this superb green tea supplied to us from the Tsuen family who have operated their teashop from same location on the banks of the Uji river since 1160.

    Grown in nearby Shirakawa, this is an extremely high quality gyokuro. Gyokuro is shade grown before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste. Less that 0.5 % of all green tea harvested in Japan ends up as gyokuro, and among those, this gem is near the top. This green tea is hand-picked (rare - see video tab) and is pure "Gokou" cultivar. Another unique aspect is that unlike the majority of gyokuro grown today, the shading is not done with modern shade cloth but instead using traditional straw and reed screening. The combination of hand-picking and traditional shading methods make this a very "old school" gyokuro.

    Once you learn to make it properly, you wil be hooked for life! Since this is a connoisseur grade of gyokuro and is not considered a beginner's green tea, make sure to read our how to brew gyokuro page as it is brewed differently than sencha.

  • Cooking Grade Uji Matcha

    Cooking Grade Uji Matcha

    After much consideration, O-Cha.com now offers a higher quality of cooking grade matcha than what is usually encountered on the market. Because we are based in Japan, we are also able to do so at a very reasonable price.  As will all of our products, it is freshly packaged and does not spend weeks in ocean transit or sit for months on a shelf in a warehouse. Unlike many of the cooking grade matcha you may see offered online which are actually grown in China and not Japan, our matcha originates from Uji Japan near Kyoto. Further, we offer this in a 300 gram package.

    Here’s a sad fact - Just because your matcha was produced by a Japanese company does not automatically mean it was actually grown in Japan. There are some Japanese companies who grow some of their matcha in China, import it into Japan, and then re-export it again.  This is particularly the case when it comes to cooking grades of matcha.

    Matcha comes in many quality levels but is basically separated into ceremonial grade and cooking grade matcha. While it’s true one could use any of our ceremonial grade matcha for cooking and as a food ingredient (and would in turn be especially magical), authentic, Japan-grown, ceremonial grade matcha is expensive and can make the price of a matcha based product prohibitively expensive. There is a reason why truly ceremonial grades of matcha are usually sold in 20 - 30 gram cans and not by the kilo.

    We realize there is a real need for a matcha that while may not be suitable for the tea ceremony, is still needed to be of a sufficiently high enough quality to be used in lattes, smoothies, ice cream, baked goods, etc. Know that careful consideration went into our choice of cooking grade matcha because until we offered this product, we refused to sell anything less than ceremonial grade. We wanted real, authentic Japanese matcha.  Not powdered sencha, but matcha. Not grown in China, but grown in Japan. We wanted as high of quality as possible while still making the price reasoable. While this cooking grade matcha will not compete with the quality of our ceremonial grades of matcha, it's actually better than what many are offering online as supposed "ceremonial" matcha!

    As with all of our products, this product You cannot get this kind of fresh product from outside of Japan.

    Starting in 2016, we began to offer an especially select Kyoto sencha from the Tsuen teahouse in Uji, Kyoto Japan. They call this lineup "Chadōraku" and each year it is different. Tsuen teashop owner Yusuke Tsuen is an expert tea taster and has won many awards in tea tasting competitions so you can be sure that what he selects will be outstanding.

    For 2017 it's our pleasure to be able to offer an especially outstanding, Limited Edition light steamed green tea ("asamushi-cha") from Minamiyamashiro village (お茶の京都みなみやましろ村) near Uji. We exclusively obtain this from Japan's oldest teashop, Tsuen Tea. This item is 100% Sakimidori leaves from the first harvest. Seldom do we come across a light steamed green tea with needles of this quality and appearance. When brewed, it yields a very nice pronounced Kyoto umami flavor. The astringency is a bit strong and it's got somewhat of a tart taste and for that reason, we consider this to be somewhat of an advanced brewer's green tea. If brewed properly under capable hands, however, it will result in a very nice infusion with strong umami aftertaste. Although you could brew this in any type of Japanese teapot, you will get the best out of it by brewing in either a hōhin or shiboridashi teapot.

    Yes, we realize it is rather expensive - obviously a lot of hard work went into producing this gem of a green tea. However, our job has always been to first and foremost obtain the best green teas possible for our customers with pricing being a secondary (but still important) consideration. For that reason, we offer this in 30 gram packaging. To keep costs down, this is one of the few green teas we carry in which we will not be able to offer bonus points. Here is your chance to try some of the best of what Japan has to offer in Japanese green tea.

    From the first harvest, this is a very special sencha from Kagoshima prefecture located at the southern tip of Japan. O-Cha.com was the first internet tea shop to offer Sae Midori to the general public outside of Japan and it indeed has proven itself to be a popular choice since introduction.

    A very easy to brew green tea! The "Sae Midori" clone of green tea plant is a cross between Yabukita and Asatsuyu varieties and was only just registered in 1990. Since it does not tolerate frost, it is mostly grown in Southern Kagoshima. Strong in color and aroma, but a bit on the sweet side, you will be greeted with a very wonderful, grassy aroma upon opening of the package. Without a doubt, this item offers one of the most intense, emerald green color you will likely ever come across in any green tea. We are sure you will be pleased!

    Note that this is a deep steamed green tea with very fine, almost dust-like leaf particles. While you can brew it in a variety of teapots, it is best prepared in a teapot designed for fukamushi-cha (deep steamed green tea)

    This green tea comes from Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves.  New for 2017, we knew we would buy this one as soon as we tried it, it's really delicious. Organic Sae Midori asamushi is a light steamed green tea  from the Sae Midori clone and is somewhat rare to be processed in the light steamed form. This product is both flavorful and aromatic, much more so than the typical deep steamed Sae Midori. If you are a light-steamed green tea fan, you should really enjoy this one.  As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

    A first rate, first flush green tea. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, this 100% Yabukita green tea comes from the famous Makinohara tea growing district in Shizuoka Prefecture. Very green and very thick. Fukamushi Sencha "Kaoru" has a somewhat more pronounced grassy aroma and taste compared with the average deep steamed green tea and the taste remains on the palate for an extended time.

    An overall easy brewer (a teapot for fukuamushi-cha is recommended, however). Be sure to not brew too hot, for too long, or with too much leaf. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, freshly packaged in nitrogen filled bags.

  • Kawane Wa-Kōcha

    Kawane Wa-Kōcha is Japanese Black Tea grown in Kawane town (川根町), located in the Haibara District of Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. While this area is notable for its production of mainly green teas, it may be surprising to know there are numerous growers who specialize in producing black teas as well. This particular version is produced by a rather old and famous company founded in the 8th year of the Meiji period (ca 1875). The tea blender is a 73 year old tea master and uses high quality techniques in the orthodox manner similar to the way traditional Darjeeling is made, but with a Japanese touch. This tea has characteristics similar to both Darjeeling and Ceylon tea, has a strong aroma, a smooth flavor, and has hints of Japanese sweetness. Kawane Wa-Kōcha can be served straight or with milk and sugar (usually on the last infusion). The breed is a blend of Zairai and Benifuki clones. Unlike most Japanese produced black teas which usually come from the second harvest, due to the higher latitudes this tea is grown at, the producer blends this black tea with both first and second harvests, the ratio changing according to year and conditions. The resulting tea results in a more bold flavor than normally encountered with other Japanese black teas.

    To brew this particular tea, unlike with traditional green tea, you can achieve best results by bringing fresh water to nearly the boiling point in a kettle (instead of an air pot or water heater), and brewing two teaspoons per 8 ounces of water for 3 to 4 minutes.

    This delightful green tea is grown organically in Shizuoka. Medium steamed, Organic Sayamakaori Sencha is rather bold in flavor and imparts a much stronger than average aroma. The leaf itself has not been particularly finely processed, however once brewed it is very flavorful. Our particular Sayamakaori gives quite a few delicious multiple infusions, more than the average sencha we come across. Very delicious, we predict this will become a favorite with organic green tea enthusiasts. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.
