Cooking Grade Uji Matcha

Cooking Matcha - From Uji Japan

O-Cha.com now offers a higher quality of cooking grade matcha than what is usually encountered on the market. Because we are based in Japan, we are also able to do so at a very reasonable price.  As will all of our products, it is freshly packaged and does not spend weeks in ocean transit or sit for months on a warehouse shelf.

Here’s a sad fact - Just because your matcha was produced by a Japanese company does not automatically mean it was actually grown in Japan. There are some Japanese companies who grow some of their matcha in China, import it into Japan, and then re-export it again.  This is particularly the case when it comes to cooking grades of matcha.

Unlike many of the cooking grade "matcha" you may see offered online, rest assured our cooking matcha originates in Uji Japan near Kyoto.

Further, we offer this in a 300 gram package.

Matcha comes in many quality levels but is basically separated into ceremonial grade and cooking grade matcha. While it’s true one could use any of our ceremonial grade matcha for cooking and as a food ingredient (and would in turn be especially magical), authentic, Japan-grown, ceremonial grade matcha is expensive and can make the price of a matcha based product prohibitively expensive. There is a reason why truly ceremonial grades of matcha are usually sold in 20 - 30 gram cans and not by the kilo.

To see what goes into product a high quality ceremonial grade of matcha, do check out this matcha leaf video

We realize there is a real need for a matcha that while may not be suitable for the tea ceremony, is still needed to be of a sufficiently high enough quality to be used in lattes, smoothies, ice cream, baked goods, etc. Know that careful consideration went into our choice of cooking grade matcha because until we offered this product, we refused to sell anything less than ceremonial grade. We wanted real, authentic Japanese matcha.  Not powdered sencha, but matcha. Not grown in China, but grown in Japan. We wanted as high of quality as possible while still making the price reasonable. While this cooking grade matcha will not compete with the quality of our ceremonial grades of matcha, it's actually better than what many are offering online as supposed "ceremonial" matcha!

As with all of our products, this product You cannot get this kind of fresh product from outside of Japan.

Hi! Just dropped my review on this great cooking matcha, and I was just wondering if it could be purchased in bigger amounts? Granted, I know 300g is already a lot as is, but I'm feeling a bit extravagant considering how affordable this is. Maybe sometime next year if my family finishes it a bit too quickly, haha.

We only sell that in 300 gram sizes, however you can simply increase the quantity you purchase

Hello, since shipping is expensive right now, I am thinking about getting a larger batch but worried how fresh the matcha is right now. If I buy cooking matcha right now, what harvest date will I receive? Is there any new harvest coming up in the near future?

          Kevin Moore
          May 10, 2020, 12:07

          Hello,

This is a product which is fresh whenever you buy it. Even though the harvest date was last year it's stored under special refrigerated conditions and not packaged until we request it. Typically, however, higher quality matcha is harvested in May and allowed to age. Usually the new harvest of this matcha comes out in June or July, however, as this is cooking matcha and not ceremonial grade. I think it will not matter what time of the year you purchase it, the quality will be fresh and it will be the same.

          Hello,

This matcha is of course safe to drink. This particular product is usually used as an ingredient in baked goods as well as matcha smoothies, ice cream, etc. You could use this to make matcha latte by adding milk and sugar to it. While you could safely drink this as it is, if you wish to drink matcha by itself you would be better off to purchase one of our other matcha teas which are meant for that. Keep in mind there is a process for drinking matcha which will require a tea bowl and a bamboo whisk.

For inexpensive drinking, how would this compare to the powdered sencha?

It's comparable, though the taste is a bit different, it's a bit less astringent than powdered sencha.

Ordered this on O-Cha's recommendation after we reviewed their powdered Sencha. It arrived in less than a week, but I only got to review it now because it's been rather busy lately.

This is even better than the powdered Sencha, and for (I think) the same price per gram! Started with a raw tasting. So much umami in a humble cup. And not a hint of astringency unlike the sencha. Even when I lick any loose powder off of the teaspoon I use to scoop it. The colour is more of an olive green rather than the electric green I imagined, but this is cooking grade matcha, and it doesn't detract from the taste.

I put it in everything I drink that isn't water: my protein shakes, meal replacement shakes, and it complements them quite nicely.

Gives me quite a bit of energy to boot. I remember not taking it the other day and I ended up napping for several hours. It really keeps me up when I have to. :)

Thank you for the recommendation! I'll likely keep this in stock for regular consumption. And then save up for something a bit fancier later down the road. Looking forward to more of your great offerings!

Absolutely delicious in a latte. Compared to matchas from outside Japan, the taste blows them out of the water, even ones labelled "ceremonial grade." Can't wait to use in smoothies and baking.

Very competitive price and great value-for-money quality. We use this mostly for baking or sweets and it's very suitable for that. Matcha lattes are also possible but we found it more suited for cooking pursuits. Loose, the matcha's color is a bit dull but this shouldn't be compared with ceremonial grade matcha anyway and in baked goods the color turns a vibrant dark green. Hopefully, it will keep a while - 300g is quite a lot.

Exceptional value and the taste is great baked in smoothie or just drink on it is own. I promise, you won’t find better culinary grade matcha for that price, not even in Japan. Much better than most of the low priced so called ceremonial grade matcha you see on sale outside of Japan. Buy with confidence, you won’t be disappointed.
