Kyūshū Green Tea

Deep Steamed Oku Midori - Those of you who know what this is will be quite happy to know that this year we were able to procure this deep steamed, grassy, umami-bomb of a green tea.  For a myriad of reasons, this has been one of the more harder to obtain green teas for us over the years. We didn't have it at all in 2022 and nearly didn't get it again this year. But alas, this year we pushed it and made it happen.

From Kagoshima, an extremely flavorful, full of umami,  deep steamed green tea.  The high quality of this Oku Midori fukamushi green tea is obvious from the first sip. It has a very beautiful emerald green color to it and strong aroma. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves. Our personal opinion - This is probably one of the all around best green teas you will ever drink. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged, as fresh of a green tea as you can get. 

We're not putting it into the "shincha" category because it's already June.  However, know that this is a very fresh, first harvest green tea from 2023.

Organic Oku Midori - A Kagoshima sencha, quite frankly this is probably one of the best organic sencha green teas we have ever come across! A first rate medium steamed organic green tea. This has become a very popular since we added it to our lineup. The high quality of this green tea is obvious from the first sip and we feel is a particularly good quality value for the price. It has a beautiful green color to it and strong aroma. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, it is grown and certified organic. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged, as fresh of an organic green tea as you can get.

This organic kabusecha green tea comes from Kirishima City, Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves. Organic Kabusecha is grown for 14 to 20 days under 45% shade before harvest giving it taste characteristics of both sencha and gyokuro. This version comes from the Yabukita clone and is lightly steamed.  The aroma is unusually strong, it has a lovely green color and is quite flavorful.  Brew as you would for sencha. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light-yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to its high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivative of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and characteristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to cultivate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones do not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima. Medium steamed, this sencha has an intense green color to it, medium body, and carries a rather intense, nice grassy aroma and an unusually strong umami flavor. Organic Kirishima Sencha has a very nicely balanced astringency, aroma and taste. From Kirishima, Kagoshima Japan, a first rate, first flush green tea. Organic sencha "Asatsuyu" is harvested from the first round of young 100% Asatsuyu clone spring leaves. Medium steamed green tea (chumushi), green color with a semi-cloudy clear consistency.  We find this particular asatsuyu to be particularly aromatic and flavorful which is why we chose to include it in our lineup. If you are looking for a healthy, organic, light steamed daily sencha of good value this would be hard to beat. Certified organic JONA/JAS. This organic green tea hails from Kirishima Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves. Light-steamed (chūmushi) Organic Sencha Meiryoku has a lovely green color.  Medium aroma, somewhat low astringency, this organic sencha is nicely balanced, easy to make, and easy to drink - one of our best aquasitions of the year.  As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

Our Green Tea with Matcha Tea Bags (Matcha-Iri-Tea Bags) are a concentrated sencha grown in Kagoshima Prefecture. A combination of loose-leaf green tea and powdered sencha (not tea dust), this tea bag comes in the form of a triangular, nylon mesh bag, and will not affect the taste as traditional paper tea bags are known to do. This is a strong green tea and is especially recommended for iced tea or for use with a larger sushi teacup. For iced tea, we recommend one tea bags per liter/quart. Simply add the tea bags in the water and refrigerate.

An interesting combination of Kyūshū sencha, sencha stems, and sakura (Japanese cherry tree) leaves grown in Izu.
