Organic gyokuro Haruto is a new variety of gyokuro that was only registered about 6 years ago and is relatively rare on the market. It is only grown by a handful of farms in Kyushu, with our particular gyokuro grown in Shibushi City, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is harvested earlier in the season than typical and the risk of frost damage is high. Because of the difficulty in growing it, the fact that it's a very new and rare breed, it's unlikely you will encounter this very often in the future.  We had the opportunity to carry it this year, we tried it, and we were quite impressed.

This particular gyokuro is a very high quality green tea that has won awards in Japan. It is a variety with elegant sweetness and umami with dark green tea leaves.

As you may be aware, there are not a lot of organic gyokuro green teas that are what you would call superb, but Haruto is an exception to that general trend. Yes, the price is a bit more expensive than your regular sencha green tea, but considering that less than 1% of all green tea is grown and harvested as gyokuro, and even more rare an organic one that's this superb, that's just how it rolls with a tea of this caliber. 

We find this tea to be very delightful with complex, strong umami notes and after taste. Thoroughly delicious when brewed correctly, probably best made in a shiboridashi teapot with care. As with all gyokuro, it is shade grown for about three weeks before harvesting, giving it a greener color and sweeter taste.  Once you learn to make it properly, you wil be hooked for life!

Deep Steamed Oku Midori - Those of you who know what this is will be quite happy to know that this year we were able to procure this deep steamed, grassy, umami-bomb of a green tea.  For a myriad of reasons, this has been one of the more harder to obtain green teas for us over the years. We didn't have it at all in 2022 and nearly didn't get it again this year. But alas, this year we pushed it and made it happen.

From Kagoshima, an extremely flavorful, full of umami,  deep steamed green tea.  The high quality of this Oku Midori fukamushi green tea is obvious from the first sip. It has a very beautiful emerald green color to it and strong aroma. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves. Our personal opinion - This is probably one of the all around best green teas you will ever drink. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged, as fresh of a green tea as you can get. 

We're not putting it into the "shincha" category because it's already June.  However, know that this is a very fresh, first harvest green tea from 2023.

Organic Oku Midori - A Kagoshima sencha, quite frankly this is probably one of the best organic sencha green teas we have ever come across! A first rate medium steamed organic green tea. This has become a very popular since we added it to our lineup. The high quality of this green tea is obvious from the first sip and we feel is a particularly good quality value for the price. It has a beautiful green color to it and strong aroma. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, it is grown and certified organic. From Shizuoka, a unique breed of Japanese green tea grown organically. A first rate, first harvest, deep steamed green tea, the high quality is obvious from the first sip. Strong "umami" sweetness, less astringent and mellow. As with many organic green teas, Organic Sencha "Oku Yutaka" is single estate and is not blended. Harvested from the first round of young spring leaves, it is certified organic. Nitrogen flushed and vacuum packaged, as fresh of an organic green tea as you can get.

This organic kabusecha green tea comes from Kirishima City, Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves. Organic Kabusecha is grown for 14 to 20 days under 45% shade before harvest giving it taste characteristics of both sencha and gyokuro. This version comes from the Yabukita clone and is lightly steamed.  The aroma is unusually strong, it has a lovely green color and is quite flavorful.  Brew as you would for sencha. As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima Prefecture. Lightly steamed, organic Kirishima Zairai sencha has a light-yellow green color to it, medium body, and rather unique taste and aroma due to its high iron content.  Zairai means "native" in Japanese and refers to the fact that this tea is from no known modern cultivar and is a close derivative of the original tea plants imported into Japan from China in the 14th century. Since it is "wild" and grown from seed instead of cloning, there is quite a lot of variation between individual plants which gives the leaf a non-uniform leaf structure and characteristics of a blend. Although it is considered a hardier plant to cultivate, the lack of leaf conformity, in addition to lower yield than recent clones do not encourage growers to grow it means you will not come across this unique tea often.

Grown organically in the mountainous Kirishima area of Kagoshima. From Kirishima, Kagoshima Japan, a first rate, first flush green tea. Organic sencha "Asatsuyu" is harvested from the first round of young 100% Asatsuyu clone spring leaves. Medium steamed green tea (chumushi), green color with a semi-cloudy clear consistency.  We find this particular asatsuyu to be particularly aromatic and flavorful which is why we chose to include it in our lineup. This organic green tea hails from Kirishima Kagoshima and is of course harvested from the first round of young leaves. Light-steamed (chūmushi) Organic Sencha Meiryoku has a lovely green color.  Medium aroma, somewhat low astringency, this organic sencha is nicely balanced, easy to make, and easy to drink - one of our best aquasitions of the year.  As with all of our loose leaf green teas, packaged in nitrogen flushed packaging.

From Uji. Although it may look similar to matcha, this product is sencha and has different taste characteristics - it's a bit more astringent. However, because Uji Organic Powdered Sencha is grown under full sun it is poplular with those seeking maximum antioxidant levels from their tea. From the first harvest, the leaves used to produce this green tea are grown under full sun and are then ground into a fine, talcum-like. 100% certified JAS/JONA organic. No teapot needed with this item! Mix 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon (included with package, depending on cup size) in hot water and you will have an immediate supply of the healthy ingredients in green tea.
